Seagate Expansion 1TB Portable HDD, 3-Yr Data Recovery, ₹9,199

Ever had that sinking feeling when your laptop says "Disk almost full" right before a trip, or worse, when a phone dies and takes years of photos with it? A portable hard drive is the cheapest insurance you can buy against that panic, and the Seagate Expansion 1TB is the one Indian buyers reach for most.

It's sitting at ₹9,199 with a 4.4-star rating from 33,721 ratings, carries the Amazon's Choice badge and ranks #1 in External Hard Disks on Amazon.in. That's a lot of people trusting it with their files.

WHO IT'S FOR

Students backing up assignments and projects, office folks who need to carry big files between work and home, photographers and video hobbyists clearing space off a laptop, and anyone who simply wants a second copy of family photos and documents. It also works as extra storage for an Xbox Series S, according to the listing.

If you need blazing speed for editing 4K video straight off the drive, this isn't that. It's a dependable, no-fuss backup and carry drive.

DESIGN AND BUILD

It's a classic 2.5-inch portable drive in a plain black plastic shell, measuring about 11.7 x 8 x 1.5 cm and weighing around 0.4 pounds. In real life that means it slips into a laptop bag pocket and you forget it's there. Buyers regularly praise how light and portable it is.

There's no separate power adapter. It's USB 3.0 powered, so one cable does both data and power. An 18-inch (45.72 cm) USB 3.0 cable comes in the box.

KEY FEATURES IN REAL-WORLD TERMS

• •1TB of storage is roughly enough for hundreds of thousands of photos or a big library of HD videos, depending on file sizes.
• •Plug-and-play setup: it's recognised automatically by Windows and Mac, and you just drag and drop files. Mac users who want Time Machine backups will need to reformat it first, and Seagate says so on the listing.
• •The standout extra is 3 years of Rescue Data Recovery Services included, on top of a 3-year limited warranty. If the drive fails, you have a route to try and get your data back, which most budget drives don't offer.

PERFORMANCE AND WHAT BUYERS SAY

It's a mechanical drive spinning at 5400 RPM, with a listed read speed of up to 120 MB/s. Several buyers report real transfers in the 120 to 140 MB/s range, which is fine for backups and moving files around.

On the flip side, some reviews mention slower speeds and detection or connectivity hiccups, including trouble on certain MacBooks and smart TVs. A few buyers also point out that usable space is a bit lower than the number on the box, which is normal for any drive because of formatting and how capacity is counted.

Overall, Amazon's own summary says customers find it good quality, light and portable, with mixed feedback on speed and connectivity.

HOW IT COMPARES

Next to similar 1TB portable drives from WD or Toshiba, it's priced in the same ballpark, and its big edge is the included data recovery service. Seagate's One Touch adds password protection but costs more. A portable SSD will be several times faster, but you'll pay a lot more per terabyte.

VALUE FOR MONEY

At ₹9,199 there's no discount right now, so you're paying the regular price. What you get is a well-known brand, a huge base of happy buyers and a recovery safety net that's genuinely rare at this level.

VERDICT

If you want a simple, trusted 1TB drive for backups and carrying files, the Seagate Expansion is an easy pick. Just keep your expectations at hard-drive speeds, not SSD speeds. Check today's price on Amazon and give your files a safe second home.
